  1. Brian Membrey says

“Re the death of J.M. Foley of our Battn. We were in the support lines on a Messines sector the first week in August. On the 2nd or 3rd we had to go for a turn in the front line. Going up the trench I was behind Foley when a shell exploded near us and a piece caught him in the front of the head. Two of his comrades bandaged him up, and he was taken straight to the dressing station. He was then semi-concious. From what I can learn he died at No. 11 C.C.S., 7.7.17, a few days later. In that case he would be buried in one of the soldier’s cemeteries. I have enquired from our R.S.M. about his number and initials and they are the same as the man you enquired about” (Chas. Green, 2162, France, 29.11.1917)
