Shown as a 25-year-old cigar maker when he enlisted from 1 Gabo Place, South Melbourne, his widow was later in Heidelberg with her parents and two children, Steve and Ruth. Eldest son, brother, 2608, Louis Stewart DURANT, returned 27 May, 1919. A Death Notice places his parents at 291 Coventry Street, South Melbourne. Brother-in-law of William John FISHER, South Melbourne Roll.

    “I believe that Cpl. Steve Durant (5 Battn) was badly wounded, I think in the head – before Christmas at Wytecheete. He was in a Comms. trench called Bull trench on his way to get duck boots at the Stores when he was hit by a shell. If I remember right he died of wounds at the Battn. R.A.P. I am sorry I do not where he was buried. Dark, married, I can give no particulars) (Cpl. Sydney Tivey, 4321, 5 Battn)

Durant, dearly beloved husband of Annie and fond father of Steve and Ruth, loved son-in-law of Mrs Fisher, Bell-street, Heidelberg, late of South Melbourne and beloved eldest son of Stephen and Emily Durant, 291 Coventry-street, South Melbourne, aged 27 years 10 months.
