Parents: Jack and Elizabeth BLACK (both late), born South Melbourne (attestation Port Melbourne). Enlisted as an 18-year-old farmer with a sister Millie in Fitzroy as next of kin. Brother: 494 Sapper Alexander BLACK, (also shown as born in South Melbourne), 2nd Tunnelling Company, returned to Australia, 27 August 1918. The circular returned by their sister nominated Brighton as her late brother’s closest place of association, but did not suggest where he was educated.
