Pte J McKissock wrote to the Editor of the Standard from France on 9 April 1917 saying that the newspaper was enjoyed by all the Port Melbourne boys at the front.  He enclosed the issue of 6 January 1917 signed by the soldiers from Port who had read it.  O G Bergstrom was one of those men.

    Oscar Gilbert Bergstrom, son of Frans Oscar Bergstrom and Catherine Unkles, was born in Port Melbourne in 1894. His father, a Swede from Gothenburg, arrived in Australia in the 1890s. His mother was born at Port Fairy.

    By the time Oscar Bergstrom enlisted in 1916, he and his family were living in Loch Street, Coburg. He was employed as a sheet metal worked in the well known plumbing firm of W.E. Cash in Coburg, where he had been apprenticed for four years.

    Oscar was wounded in May 1917 and so no more action. He returned to Australia in January 1918 with a gunshot wound to his left thigh.

    He died at Coburg in 1967.

    Oscar’s brothers Charley (DOW 1918), Albert and Herbert also enlisted, as did his four Templeton cousins, all from Coburg.
