Parents: John (late) and Hermina Augusta YERN (previously ERMEL), born Port Melbourne, educated Violet Street SS, Bendigo. Yern enlisted as a 23-year-old labourer from Golden Square in Bendigo; his mother returned the circular from 262 Bay Street, Port Melbourne with Bendigo shown as her late son’s closest place of association, A Death Notice (The Age, 4 May, 1918) has him as “… beloved eldest son of Hermina, beloved stepson of late George ERMEL, brother of Alvina and George, late 6th Battalion (returned), Arthur and Ina” The family structure is somewhat unclear without a detailed examination – the George referred to was 18-year-old George Henry ERMEL, his mother Mrs H A (Hermina Augusta?) ERMEL, 8 Clifford Street, Port Melbourne.
