    A well-known family name around the district in footballing circles, Garbutt was born in South Melbourne and attended the Nott Street School in Port Melbourne, his parents at 24 Market Street and served seven months with the 7th Johannesburg Mounted Rifles before his time expired on 30 June, 1902. His father was listed in Pelham Street, Carlton but was at 20 Raglan Street, Port Melbourne when he died in 1919.

    Garbutt was listed as married and at 143 Heath Street, Port Melbourne when he enlisted in WW1, serving as 1949, Private with 2 Field Artillery Brigade and returning wounded from Gallipoli on February, 1916. No Birth record exists in Victoria BDM, but those of siblings confirm Emerald Hill/South Melbourne. He died Cheltenham, 1930 at 50 years of age.
